Setex Technologies® Medical Applications – Chirongen

At Setex Technologies we spent years at the Carnegie Mellon University lab, then as a start-up company, studying geckos’ ability to securely grip onto surfaces vertically or even upside down, then developing microstructured gripping and adhesive solutions that biomimicked their ability. We envisioned the applications could be almost endless, and many of them could solve issues in the medical field, delivering doctors, nurses, therapists, and patients multiple benefits. Fast forward to today, and we’re excited to see partners in this space producing their own trademarked products leveraging our technology.

One such example is Chirongen’s use of Setex grip technology to produce ChirónTape™, which delivers solutions for chiropractors and physical therapists to improve the grip between the manipulative therapist’s hand contact with the patient’s skin and target spinal articular tissue.

Hand Augmentation

ChirónTape for hand augmentation are pads consisting of Setex’s anti-slip microstructures that are applied directly to the chiropractor’s hands using a skin-safe pressure sensitive adhesive. Once applied, the manipulative therapist’s hand pressure converts into significant friction to the skin. Setex’s gecko-inspired grip technology includes thousands of mushroom-shaped microstructures that provide enhanced friction to the skin, even in oily or sweaty conditions . This enhanced grip along the skin allows for better control and powerful manipulative therapy with less effort.

Target Spine Augmentation

Applying ChirónTape™ to specific points on a patient’s back allows the therapist to target those spots that require treatment with no slippage, ensuring the pressure is administered exactly where it is needed, and allows for superior accuracy and control. It takes less than 30 seconds to place the ChirónTape, and it comes with anatomical markings to show the recommended application positions, contact points, and direction for the manipulation force.

Skin Grip with No Skin Irritation

Many medical devices rely on tacky materials which can leave residue and can often result in skin irritation.  Because the mechanism of Setex’s grip is mechanical in nature, it naturally leaves no residue, is skin safe, and is soft and comfortable. At Setex Technologies, we continue to work with partners in the medical field, like Chirongen, to uncover more ways in which our revolutionary, patented, gecko-inspired technology can improve the way medicine is being practiced.
